EU parliament approves “chat control” message scanning until 2028

The measure would let firms scan for child sexual abuse material until 2028, while exempting communications with end-to-end encryption.

The European Parliament has passed legislation that would allow tech companies to scan private messages for child sexual abuse material through 2028, renewing the bloc’s controversial “chat control” framework, according to Cointelegraph.

Lawmakers largely voted against extending the earlier “Chat Control 1.0” scheme, but the effort to stop it did not succeed because 361 lawmakers were needed to reject the regulation. Only 314 voted to stop the law, while 276 supported it.

Supporters said the rules are needed to protect children and combat the spread of abusive material, while privacy and cryptography advocates have criticized the approach for weakening the principles behind encrypted messaging.

The legislation includes an exemption for communications where end-to-end encryption is applied, and the updated laws will now be sent back to the Council of the EU for approval or rejection. The vote followed an urgent procedure earlier in the week after the prior framework expired in April, Cointelegraph added.
