Malaysia and Thailand pledge to resolve damaging seafood trade row
The agreement follows a weeks-long dispute over seafood and fish imports that has severely damaged Thailand’s shrimp industry, with leaders saying they will solve the issue next week.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his Thai counterpart Anutin Charnvirakul said they would work to settle a damaging trade dispute between the two countries, according to SCMP Economy.
The row has centered on seafood and fish imports, and it has vexed relations while severely damaging Thailand’s shrimp industry, the outlet reported.
SCMP Economy said the leaders also discussed improving security along their porous border as part of broader regional security talks, signaling a push to stabilize ties beyond trade.
During the meeting, Anwar described the neighbors’ ability to resolve the problem quickly, saying, when asked about timing, that it would be handled next week, SCMP Economy reported.
