Trump withholds signature from bipartisan housing affordability bill
The bill includes faster environmental reviews for home construction and limits how many single-family homes large Wall Street investors can already own.
US President Donald Trump said he will not sign a bipartisan housing affordability bill he previously dismissed as “a big yawn,” though the measure can still become law without his signature, according to SCMP Economy.
Trump said he was withholding his signature in protest of the US Senate failing to pass the SAVE America Act, which he described as a requirement for proof of citizenship to register to vote and the creation of a national voter database using state records, the outlet reported.
The housing bill marked a rare area of bipartisan agreement in a divided Congress. Its provisions include waiving or speeding up environmental reviews for home construction projects and capping the number of already constructed single-family homes that big Wall Street investors can own, SCMP Economy said.
Trump also canceled a June 24 signing ceremony for the housing bill, aiming to pressure Republicans to pass the SAVE America Act, SCMP Economy reported.
