China raises concerns over new US curbs in senior trade talks
The call came as both sides tried to lock in economic deliverables ahead of Xi Jinping’s expected September visit to the United States.
China voiced “serious concern” about recent US economic and trade restrictions during a video call between Vice-Premier He Lifeng, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, according to a readout cited by Xinhua.
The exchange focused on implementing an “important consensus” reached at a Beijing meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, as both sides worked to finalize economic deliverables ahead of Xi’s expected September visit to the United States.
The back-and-forth comes amid months of escalating trade tensions that have included additional US tariffs, export controls, and tit-for-tat restrictions aimed at each other’s companies, while engagement continued in an effort to secure outcomes for the leaders’ summit.
The SCMP Economy also noted that on Tuesday the Trump administration announced bans on imports of new Chinese robots and power inverters, citing national security and supply chain vulnerability concerns.
