Jeffrey Sachs picks Hong Kong and Shenzhen as Silk Road end points

Sachs said the pair of cities, which he tied to green and digital technology, form a major innovation cluster he expects will power that agenda.

Prominent economist Jeffrey Sachs said he chose Hong Kong and Shenzhen as the final stops on an overland journey retracing the footsteps of Marco Polo, calling them key nodes in the modern version of the Silk Road.

According to SCMP Economy, Sachs, a Columbia University professor and former adviser to the UN secretary general, launched from Rome on June 13 on a 43-day trip covering 15,000 km, with the Hong Kong and Shenzhen leg positioned as the journey’s “eastern end” equivalent.

Sachs described the trip as a message focused on peace, connectivity, and sustainable development through green technology, and he linked the modern Silk Road theme to the cities role in supporting innovation.

In an email, SCMP Economy reported that Sachs said Shenzhen and Hong Kong together make up what he called the world’s greatest innovation cluster, positioned to power the green and digital age.
