US and China plan renewed AI safety dialogue focused on national security
Former senior US officials said continued talks are meant to give the US visibility into China’s AI progress, including successes and failures.
A renewed round of US-China dialogue on artificial intelligence risks is expected to further US national security interests, according to former senior US officials involved in China policy, after the two countries agreed to intergovernmental AI safety talks following the Trump-Xi summit in Beijing.
Jeannette Chu, a long-serving US diplomat and former senior export control attaché in Beijing, said the purpose of ongoing engagement should be viewed as “self-preservation from a national security standpoint,” framing the talks as a way to manage fast-moving technology developments.
Speaking at an Asia Society event in San Francisco, Chu added that maintaining dialogue is important for gaining visibility into where China is heading with AI, and understanding what it is doing, including its successes and failures, SCMP Economy reported.
The assessment underscores that the dialogue is positioned around risk visibility and national security considerations, rather than solely technical coordination, SCMP Economy said.
