Hang Seng Bank launches Silver Academy for seniors and anti-fraud

The first year targets more than 800 people aged 65 and above, amid data showing 562 seniors were victims of investment fraud in the first five months of 2026.

Hang Seng Bank has launched the Hang Seng Silver Academy, a community programme aimed at supporting seniors in Hong Kong with wellbeing activities, digital inclusion and a strong focus on anti-fraud awareness. The initiative is designed to help older residents safely navigate everyday services that increasingly rely on screens, links and prompts, while also addressing the risk that fraudsters can tailor scams to appear legitimate.

The academy is being rolled out in partnership with The Community Chest of Hong Kong and four community partners, including the Evangelical Lutheran Church Social Service, St. James’ Settlement, The Salvation Army and Yang Memorial Methodist Social Service.

In its first year, the programme expects to reach more than 800 people aged 65 and above. Police figures cited for the first five months of 2026 show 562 seniors fell victim to investment fraud, losing a combined HK$560 million, and the average loss per elderly victim rose to HK$1.01 million from HK$820,000 in the previous year.

The story also points to Hong Kong’s ageing population, saying official projections indicate that by the middle of the century, more than one in three residents will be 65 or above, underscoring why recognizing scams and using digital services safely are framed as key life skills.
