Typhoon Bavi prompts flight and transit cancellations in eastern China
China forecasts Typhoon Bavi will hit between Taizhou in Zhejiang and Fuding in Fujian early Sunday, with winds up to 45 meters per second.
Authorities across eastern China have intensified emergency preparations as Typhoon Bavi strengthened and moved toward the coast, with cancellations affecting travel, according to SCMP Economy.
The National Meteorological Centre forecast the storm will make landfall between Taizhou in Zhejiang province and Fuding in Fujian province in the early hours of Sunday. The NMC said Bavi reached severe typhoon status at midnight and its center was about 540 km away from the Zhejiang-Fujian border, moving northwest at up to 35 km per hour.
SCMP Economy reported the typhoon is expected to maintain its intensity before landfall and then turn north-northwestward, gradually weakening as it moves inland. The NMC said it could bring winds of up to 45 meters per second.
Emergency response teams have been mobilised in the affected regions, including firefighters and crews to repair power grids, and the East China Sea Rescue Bureau put vessels and crews on standby. Fujian and Taizhou have also activated thousands of local volunteers on 24-hour standby.
