Philippines rules out broad talks with China over South China Sea
The Philippines said it will keep only limited military communication channels with Beijing and tied wider engagement to China changing its conduct around Scarborough Shoal and other contested areas.
Philippines defense chief Gilberto Teodoro Jnr said Manila will keep only limited military communication channels with China and ruled out broader engagement unless Beijing changes its conduct around Scarborough Shoal and other contested areas, according to a recent interview carried by SCMP Economy.
Teodoro said negotiations and other activities were not possible due to what he described as a lack of good faith and a lack of respect for the Philippines’ territorial integrity.
His comments came after earlier reports that the Philippines’ defense and armed forces attaché in Beijing, Navy Captain Arnold Fortin, and his staff were recalled to Manila for “consultations,” which Teodoro described as part of a “process of re-establishing and readjusting” postings under a “new engagement framework.”
Teodoro spoke after he and military chiefs met President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr for a command conference late on Tuesday. The remarks also followed his earlier status as a person sanctioned by Beijing and barred from visiting China, SCMP Economy noted.
