ASEAN diplomats told Suu Kyi is in good health and will be cared for

Myanmar’s envoy said detained Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi is in good health, as ASEAN foreign ministers met in person to restart a stalled peace initiative.

Foreign ministers from ASEAN were told that detained former Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi is in good health and would be looked after, according to remarks by Maria Theresa Lazaro, the Philippine foreign minister, as reported by SCMP Economy. Lazaro said she was seeking access to Suu Kyi, 81, who has been detained since the military ousted her elected government in 2021. She said the Myanmar foreign minister’s message was framed around taking care of Suu Kyi as a relative.

Suu Kyi is serving a 27-year sentence, which was recently commuted by one-third, on a series of charges her allies say were fabricated to keep her out of politics. Those charges include incitement, corruption, election fraud, and violations of the state secrets law, and she has denied wrongdoing.

ASEAN top diplomats met in person with their Myanmar counterpart on Sunday for the first time since the 2021 coup, an effort to restart a five-year-old peace initiative that has failed to end Myanmar’s civil war.
