Japan targets 60 million foreign tourist arrivals by 2030
Japan plans to expand Narita Airport capacity toward half a million annual flights and improve rail links to central Tokyo by the early 2030s.
Japan is pursuing tourism as a long-term growth engine, with a government goal to reach 60 million foreign visitors a year by 2030. South China Morning Post Economy notes that Japan recorded 42.7 million arrivals last year, a record that beat the prior year’s high by nearly 16 percent.
To support the target, the government is funding infrastructure upgrades at Narita Airport, including extending the second runway to 2,500 metres and building a new 3,500-metre third runway. The airport expansion is designed to raise annual capacity from 340,000 flights to half a million.
Rail planners are also working on service improvements between Narita and central Tokyo, aiming to nearly double train frequency by the early 2030s. New extensions are planned to link two lines directly to Haneda Airport to make domestic transfers easier, according to South China Morning Post Economy.
