China Eastern ordered more Airbus jets as China pushes its C919
The airline placed a new Airbus A330neo order for 25 jets, at a catalogue value of US$9.35 billion, after an earlier Airbus deal just three months prior.
China Eastern placed an order for 25 Airbus A330neo jets, a transaction valued at US$9.35 billion at catalogue prices, highlighting how a major Chinese carrier continues to buy aircraft from Europe even as Beijing promotes domestic alternatives.
The airline also operates the inaugural commercial routes of China’s home-grown C919 passenger jet, and it had placed another Airbus order just three months earlier, according to commentary published by SCMP Economy.
SCMP Economy frames the pattern as leverage, suggesting the different buying decisions can still serve the same long-term competitive objectives as China seeks to strengthen its position in commercial aviation.
The development underscores the continued role of international aircraft sales in China’s broader efforts to challenge European aerospace rivals, even as Chinese policy aims to supplant competing technologies.
