US launches fresh strikes against Iran to weaken Strait of Hormuz attacks
The strikes began at 5 p.m. New York time Sunday, amid reports of Iranian fire at commercial ships and interceptions involving a cruise missile and a drone.
US Central Command, or CENTCOM, said the US launched additional strikes against Iran on Sunday, aiming to further reduce Iran’s ability to attack civilian vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, according to FXStreet citing Bloomberg.
CENTCOM said the strikes started at 5 p.m. New York time. Earlier, Washington and Tehran issued conflicting statements about whether the strait remains open to shipping, while CNN reported that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fired at commercial ships and that US aircraft intercepted an Iranian cruise missile and an attack drone.
FXStreet also cited reports from US allies in the region, including that Kuwait said strikes hit border posts and an oil rig, Qatar reported injuries from interceptions, and Oman, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates said they detected fire during the weekend.
Energy market context, including WTI crude, was also outlined: oil prices can be influenced by disruptions to supply routes tied to conflict risk around key chokepoints, and WTI is priced in US dollars, meaning a weaker dollar can support higher oil prices.
