ASEAN foreign ministers meet Myanmar junta counterpart in Bangkok
The re-engagement follows Asean’s earlier decision to bar junta representatives from regional summits after Myanmar ignored a five-point peace plan.
Myanmar’s gradual return to Southeast Asian diplomacy continued after foreign ministers from ASEAN met the representative of the junta-run government in Bangkok, according to SCMP Economy.
Analysts cited by the outlet warned the move could help legitimize a leadership that has not committed to ending the ongoing violence in the country, where the civil conflict has killed thousands since the military’s 2021 coup.
ASEAN had previously taken the unprecedented step of barring junta representatives from regional summits after Myanmar ignored a five-point peace plan.
SCMP Economy said the meeting comes after Senior General Min Aung Hlaing became president following an election widely described as a sham, and that ASEAN has historically been reluctant to interfere in members’ domestic affairs even as Myanmar appears to reopen a pathway back into the bloc.
