Chinese quantum scientist Pan Jianwei wins UN basic science prize
Unesco said Pan was recognized for large scale secure quantum communications and scalable quantum computation.
Chinese quantum scientist Pan Jianwei has won the United Nations’ top fundamental science prize for his work in quantum computation and communications, Unesco announced, according to SCMP Economy.
Unesco said the award honors two scientists for discoveries and innovations in basic sciences that drive global or regional transformation. Pan, a professor of physics at the University of Science and Technology of China, was recognized for contributions to large scale secure quantum communications and scalable quantum computation.
Pan shared this year’s honor with Sergei Sheiko of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who was recognized for polymer physics research tied to the rational design of soft materials. The prize is an annual UN basic science award, funded by the Russian government, that commemorates Dmitri Mendeleev.
SCMP Economy noted that in 2016 Pan’s team launched Micius, also known as Mozi, the world’s first quantum satellite, into low Earth orbit for long distance quantum transmissions. The outlet added that quantum communication is designed to transfer information in a way that resists eavesdropping.
