Maduro backs dialogue ahead of US-backed talks on Venezuela

The US and Venezuela have agreed on a road map for “gradual normalisation” of diplomatic ties before a meeting next week between government and opposition representatives.

Venezuela’s imprisoned deposed former leader Nicolas Maduro has welcomed “any path to dialogue” ahead of a US-backed meeting scheduled for next week, where representatives of the country’s interim government and opposition leaders are expected to talk, according to SCMP Economy.

In a message shared on Maduro’s official Telegram account, the former president said dialogue should help consolidate peace, coexistence, and reconciliation among Venezuelans.

SCMP Economy reports that the two countries have agreed on a road map for “gradual normalisation” of diplomatic ties, according to a statement from Venezuela’s foreign ministry.

The outlet also notes Maduro, who is imprisoned in New York after being captured in a US military operation in January, claimed victory in Venezuela’s 2024 presidential elections and a mandate for a third term, despite the US-backed opposition releasing voting tally sheets showing Edmundo Gonzalez won by a landslide.
