Fed governor Waller warns inflation is moving beyond tariff effects
Waller said inflation has spread past commonly cited drivers, including an energy price spike linked to tariffs, and cautioned that further rate hikes could still be on the table.
CNBC reports that Fed governor Christopher Waller said the central bank should not try to address inflation by focusing only on past drivers, warning that policymakers should not fight the “last war.”
In remarks highlighted by CNBC, Waller said inflation has broadened beyond the often-cited factors that have been used to explain recent price pressures, including the impact from an energy price spike tied to tariffs.
While emphasizing that the Fed should look beyond those narrower drivers, Waller also indicated that additional interest rate hikes remain possible, depending on how inflation evolves.
