EU foreign ministers back work on a ban on settlement imports
The EU executive last week outlined options to curb trade with Israeli settlements, including a ban, as some countries criticized the pace of talks.
Most EU countries backed a move to develop an EU-wide proposal for banning imports of products from Israeli settlements, the bloc’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said Monday, after a meeting of EU foreign ministers.
Kallas said the option that received the most support was a ban on trade with illegal settlements, and that ambassadors were tasked with taking the work forward. She added ministers agreed they could reconvene an extraordinary meeting if needed.
The announcement came after the EU executive laid out options last week to curb trade with settlements, including an outright ban, as pressure builds for the bloc to act as a whole.
Diplomats cited by SCMP Economy said frustration has grown over the slow pace of the discussion, with some accusing the European Commission of dragging its feet.
