Protesters march in San Francisco demanding pause on frontier AI training
The rally, organized by Stop the AI Race, urged companies to halt training new frontier models while keeping existing systems available, citing safety, jobs, energy use, and local housing costs.
About 200 protesters marched through San Francisco Saturday between the offices of OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind, calling for a pause in the training of more powerful AI systems. Decrypt reports the demonstrators asked frontier AI companies to stop developing new frontier models while keeping existing systems available.
Organizers said the push goes beyond AI safety to include concerns about job losses, the environmental impact of AI, and rising housing costs in San Francisco. The march was organized by former AI researcher Michaël Trazzi and, according to Decrypt, also included calls for stronger local and state regulation.
Protesters urged companies to redirect research toward AI safety and alignment until stronger safeguards are in place. Decrypt also reports that organizers want continued advocacy for an international pause on frontier AI development alongside pressure for lawmakers to increase oversight of advanced AI systems.
Decrypt reports the demonstration follows a similar earlier Stop the AI Race protest in March, when roughly 200 people walked between the offices of Anthropic, OpenAI, and xAI to call for a coordinated pause. OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
