Star Ferry in Hong Kong seeks about a 30% fare increase

Adult weekday fares on the Central to Tsim Sha Tsui route would rise from HK$5 to HK$6.50, according to a government paper ahead of a Legislative Council transport panel meeting.

Hong Kong’s Star Ferry has applied to raise fares by about 30% across its two franchised routes, citing rising operating costs, while also proposing a new pet-friendly service between Wan Chai and Tsim Sha Tsui, according to SCMP Economy.

The operator filed the request in March to increase fares by between 80 HK cents and HK$2, or about 10 to 25 US cents, per journey. For the Central to Tsim Sha Tsui route, adult weekday upper deck fares would increase from HK$5 to HK$6.50, and lower-deck tickets from HK$4 to HK$5.20.

On weekends and public holidays, adult upper-deck fares would rise from HK$6.50 to HK$8.50 and lower-deck fares from HK$5.60 to HK$7.30. The same adult weekday and weekend fare levels would apply on the Wan Chai to Tsim Sha Tsui route, the paper said.

SCMP Economy reports that concessionary fares for children, elderly passengers, and people with disabilities would also increase by about 29% to 31% ahead of a Legislative Council transport panel meeting scheduled for Friday.
