Wildfires near Spokane evacuate 60,000 and destroy at least 600 structures

Officials said about 21 square kilometers burned over the weekend and some fires in the Spokane area remain uncontained, with evacuees including patients at the US Veterans Affairs hospital.

Wildfires in eastern Washington have prompted the evacuation of about 60,000 people in the Spokane area, while authorities said at least 600 homes, businesses, and other structures have been destroyed, according to the Associated Press via SCMP Economy.

The fires, located in and around Spokane, the state’s second largest city, burned about 21 square kilometers over the weekend. The blaze is part of dozens of wildfires across the western United States that have stretched the ability of federal, state, and local agencies to respond, SCMP Economy reported.

Across the state, about 1,000 square kilometers have burned, and some fires, including those near Spokane, have not been contained. Fire officials and police said there were no reports of injuries or people unaccounted for, though they cautioned the response effort is still early, SCMP Economy said.

SCMP Economy also reported that evacuees in Spokane included patients at the US Veterans Affairs hospital.
