US launches campaign to disable ICC operations and threatens sanctions

The State Department said the effort is aimed at stopping the ICC from targeting US servicemembers and officials.

The United States announced a campaign against the Hague-based International Criminal Court, saying the ICC poses an “intolerable threat” to US sovereignty and that Washington will threaten sanctions.

According to a State Department statement, the campaign will be designed to “systematically disable” the ICC’s ability to operate and to prevent it from targeting American servicemen or officials.

The US also said the campaign is intended to ensure the tribunal cannot otherwise threaten American sovereignty, framing its actions as a response to the ICC’s use of international legal mechanisms.
