US to reinstate Iran blockade, charge fees for Strait of Hormuz shipping

The new system would bar Iranian vessels and ships trading with Iran from transiting, while other commercial traffic would pay for safe passage.

The United States will restore a blockade aimed at preventing Iranian ships and Iran-linked trading vessels from using the Strait of Hormuz, while introducing fees for other commercial traffic, US President Donald Trump said Monday, according to SCMP Economy.

Trump said Iranian vessels and ships trading with Iran would be barred from transiting the strategic waterway, while other commercial traffic would continue under a new payment system for safe passage.

In a statement posted on social media, Trump described the move as reinstating the “Iranian blockade,” saying it targets Iran’s ships or customers entering or leaving, while other countries would keep “fair and open” use of the strait.

SCMP Economy said the announcement represents an escalation after diplomacy failed to produce a breakthrough and attacks resumed in recent days.
