Bangladesh advances Rooppur nuclear plant as emerging energy test
The $12.65 billion, 2.4 gigawatt project is expected to start operating as early as this year, putting long term energy security and financing capacity under scrutiny for a GDP of about $510 billion in 2025.
Bangladesh is developing the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, its largest infrastructure project, as the country looks to expand long term, reliable electricity supply using a low carbon energy source.
According to OilPrice, the 2.4 gigawatt plant is being built in western Bangladesh on the banks of the Padma River and is expected to come online as early as the current year. The Russian built facility is budgeted at $12.65 billion.
OilPrice frames Rooppur as a high stakes test for nuclear power in developing nations, focusing on whether Bangladesh can integrate a complex, high capital nuclear asset without causing severe financial strain.
The outlet also notes that recent geopolitical conflicts have disrupted global energy flows, contributing to higher costs, which is part of the motivation for Bangladesh to pursue dependable energy over the longer term.
