US House passes bill to make daylight saving time permanent
The measure passed 308-117, and states could still opt out before enactment, if their legislatures act.
The US House has passed a bill that would make daylight saving time permanent, ending the twice yearly clock changes for most of the country. Associated Press reports proponents, including the White House, argued the switch would add more daylight during the hours when Americans are most active.
The bill would let states opt out if their legislatures take action before the measure takes effect. The Senate would also have to approve the bill before it could be signed into law, and it remains unclear whether it will.
Supporters said keeping the clocks in place would reduce disruption for residents and help families and businesses with more predictable evening daylight. Congressman Gus Bilirakis said the change would be a practical improvement for Florida tourism, where he said having more consistent daylight would benefit workers, businesses and visitors.
