DeepMind CEO urges US pre-release standards for frontier AI models

Hassabis said the standards body could eventually make pre-release testing mandatory for the most capable AI systems.

Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis said artificial general intelligence is likely only a few years away, framing its potential impact as comparable to the discovery of electricity or fire, in a blog post published on X, according to Decrypt.

Hassabis also argued that society is not keeping pace with how quickly AI capabilities are advancing, warning that today’s frontier models already pose cybersecurity risks and that future systems could introduce biological, nuclear, and other national security threats.

To address those concerns, Hassabis proposed creating a U.S. Frontier AI Standards Body to evaluate frontier AI models before they are deployed, with pre-release testing that could later become mandatory for the most capable systems.

He suggested the body be modeled after FINRA, funded primarily by the AI industry and staffed by independent technical experts, alongside open-source representatives, and positioned it as a federally supervised public-private partnership.
