EU lawmakers call for “youth mode” on social media

The EU wants addictive features and targeted ads disabled for minors, alongside a broader “safety-by-design” approach for platforms.

EU lawmakers in the European Union are urging social media platforms to add a dedicated “youth mode” for children, with addictive features and targeted advertising turned off, according to a statement reported by SCMP Economy.

The proposals focus on features the EU has raised concerns about, including infinite scroll, autoplay, push notifications, and highly personalized recommender systems.

SCMP Economy reported that EU lawmakers also backed a “safety-by-design” approach, arguing that those who design and manage digital platforms should carry primary responsibility for children’s safety.

The parliament’s culture committee additionally called for an EU code of conduct to regulate influencers and to set a common definition for “influencer marketing.”
