Malaysia urges major powers to apply international law consistently

Malaysia’s defense minister said major powers have a responsibility to uphold stability without bending rules to suit their interests, in remarks analysts linked to US and China.

Malaysia has urged major powers to apply international law “consistently, not selectively,” warning against the perception that large countries invoke rules only when it suits their interests, according to SCMP Economy.

The message was delivered by Malaysia’s Defence Minister Khaled Nordin on Monday at the 37th International Military Law and Operations Conference in Kuala Lumpur, where he said major powers are expected to respect international laws and rules-based orders while maintaining global peace and stability.

Analysts said the remarks were directed broadly at major powers, including the United States and China, as Southeast Asian states seek stronger deterrence against coercion while trying to preserve their strategic autonomy.

At the same conference, officials from the US Pacific Command pledged to maintain a regional presence to deter aggression, SCMP Economy reported.
