Thailand rebuts UN expert after Cambodia border displacement estimate
The UN special rapporteur said at least 20,000 Cambodians cannot return home due to Thai security forces, despite a December 2025 ceasefire that has largely held.
Thailand has issued a rebuttal to findings by a UN human rights specialist after a visit to Cambodia that concluded thousands of people remain displaced from last year’s border war.
According to the UN special rapporteur Tom Andrews, 650,000 Cambodians were displaced, and at least 20,000 people remain unable to return because of the presence of Thai security forces, even though a December 2025 ceasefire has largely held with only occasional firefights.
The dispute followed clashes in July and December 2025 that killed scores of people and displaced roughly a million people across both sides of the disputed frontier, an area now described as an 800 km border with physical barriers including fences, shipping containers, and barbed wire.
Thailand and Cambodia have exchanged blame for the conflict’s origins and alleged civilian targeting, and the two neighbors are now contesting the international narrative over the deadly territorial dispute, SCMP Economy reports.
