Norwegian tanker reported hit by explosion off Omani coast

The explosion reportedly started a fire in the engine room, but the crew was reported safe.

A Norwegian chemical tanker was reported hit by an explosion caused by an unidentified external device off the coast of Oman early Tuesday, according to MTI Network.

Crisis response coverage said Stolt Tankers reported its vessel, Stolt Magnesium, was on passage in the Arabian Sea when, around 12:40am local time, it suffered an explosion from an unidentified device.

The blast triggered a fire in the ship’s engine room, but a spokesperson said all crew members were safe and accounted for.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations agency also said a tanker reported being hit by an unknown projectile on the starboard side engine room, about 40 nautical miles northeast of Qalhat, Oman.
