Chagos return campaign opposes Mauritius sovereignty plan tied to Diego Garcia
The dispute centers on an alleged 2025 transfer of sovereignty to Mauritius while Britain would keep a 99-year lease on the Diego Garcia base for billions of dollars, according to the report.
A Chagossian activist and London-based campaigner, Bertrice Pompe, says her family was among those affected when the population of Diego Garcia and the broader Chagos Archipelago was removed in the late 1960s and early 1970s for a major US-British military base, according to SCMP Economy.
Pompe, born on Diego Garcia in 1971, said that some family members were sent to locations including the Seychelles and Mauritius, while others were separated and never reunited.
The report also highlights that Pompe opposes a 2025 agreement that would transfer sovereignty to Mauritius while Britain retains a 99-year lease on Diego Garcia, with the lease described as being worth billions of dollars.
