US imposes fresh tariffs on China and 60 other economies
The new tariff wave was announced hours before a temporary 10.0% blanket levy was set to expire, according to SCMP Economy.
The United States imposed a fresh wave of tariffs affecting China and a wider group of 60 economies on June 24, hours before a temporary 10.0% blanket levy was due to expire, SCMP Economy reported.
SCMP Economy said the tariff measures also extend to countries including Japan, South Korea, India, and European Union member states.
The outlet also tied the broader US-China relationship spotlight to technology competition, saying the US’ AI lead over China appeared to narrow after new Chinese models from Moonshot AI and Alibaba Group Holding arrived.
SCMP Economy further noted that Asian-American groups criticized a speech by US President Donald Trump as a threat to minority communities, while some China hawks praised the message and tone.
