Singapore durian prices steady as bumper harvest supply eases
Retailers attributed a late-season drop to a bumper harvest that appears to be tapering as Johor’s season winds down.
Singapore retailers say the period of sharply discounted durians is starting to fade after an unusually large harvest that briefly flooded supply in the city-state, according to SCMP Economy. Sellers interviewed by CNA said that while supply remains available, the volume that drove a wave of cheap fruit and promotions is no longer as plentiful. “The supply is still there, but not much,” Alvin Teoh, owner of Geylang fruit shop Durian 36, said. The temporary price pressure followed what agriculture calls a bumper harvest, an unusually large yield that arrives over a short period. Retailers pointed to synchronized harvest timing across Malaysian states, with both Johor and Pahang producing bumper crops around the same time. Kelvin Tan, owner of 99 Old Trees Durian, described the effect as a “wave,” saying both the Pahang and Johor harvests happened at nearly the same time this season, after which Johor’s durian season is now winding down.
