Singapore President Tharman visits Malaysia to reinforce ties
Tharman said the relationship is meant to be more than transactional, citing 60 years of trust that underpins cooperation on economic integration, renewable energy, and talent development.
Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam is on his first state visit to Malaysia this week as both countries seek to further strengthen relations, with analysts pointing to a more pragmatic willingness to move past historical issues.
In an interview published by Malaysia’s state-run news agency Bernama, Tharman said the trip highlighted how much both sides value building understanding across all levels, and he cautioned that the relationship should not become purely transactional.
Tharman also tied the visit to the long-running trust between the neighbours, describing it as the foundation for cooperation and shared development over the past 60 years, including areas such as economic integration, renewable energy, and talent development, according to Bernama.
