Solo miner earns about $200,000 from a Bitcoin block with $150 rig
The miner used a credit-card-sized Bitaxe ASIC to mine block 957,382 in about eight hours via Public Pool, netting 3.1382 BTC.
A solo Bitcoin miner struck block 957,382 and reportedly earned about $200,000, using a credit-card-sized Bitaxe ASIC device that costs between $60 and $150, according to CoinDesk. The payout was 3.1382 BTC, with the miner running the rig for roughly eight hours through Public Pool. The article notes the odds of that outcome were estimated at about once in 18,000 years, based on the miner’s reported hash rate of about 995 GH/s, or roughly 1 terahash per second.
The Bitaxe is described as an open-source ASIC miner using the same BM1370 chip found in Bitmain’s industrial Antminer S21 machines, delivering about 1 to 1.3 terahashes per second while consuming around 15 to 21 watts. CoinDesk also says this was the second time a single Bitaxe has solo-mined a block on Public Pool.
CoinDesk adds that solo Bitcoin mining has picked up recently, with 24 blocks found over the past 12 months, a 41% year-over-year increase. It also cited broader industry strain, noting Bitcoin mining difficulty dropped 5% to 127.17 trillion on July 12.
