Wikipedia coverage gaps could skew how AI tools cite major crypto

Chainstory said only 67 of the 1,000 largest crypto projects by market cap have a Wikipedia entry, and cited ChatGPT link data showing Wikipedia is among the most referenced sources.

A report shared with CoinDesk warns that limited Wikipedia coverage of crypto projects could put the industry at a disadvantage as more users rely on AI tools for information. Chainstory said only 67 of the 1,000 largest crypto projects by market cap, ranked by CoinGecko, currently have a Wikipedia entry.

The report argues that as Wikipedia applies editorial filtering designed for earlier crypto cycles, it may be leaving out established infrastructure from the encyclopedia. It cited examples including Hyperliquid and the layer-1 network Sui, which the report says are missing from Wikipedia.

Chainstory also pointed to how AI models source information from the web. It cited Profound data that 7.8% of links to sources on ChatGPT go to Wikipedia, compared with 1.8% for Reddit and 1.1% for Forbes, and it cited Trakkr data showing Wikipedia accounted for 36% of top-10 citation links on ChatGPT and 25% of top-100.

The report further notes that creating a Wikipedia page is not open to everyone, describing a process that includes review and checks for notability, verifiability, and reliable sources. It says even articles that clear the process can later be removed by administrators or through a 7-day community vote, according to Chainstory’s account.
