Boltz disables Bitcoin Lightning and Liquid swap service indefinitely

Boltz said months of automated, AI-assisted attacks have outpaced its team’s ability to ship fixes, and it warned users not to expect a quick restart.

Boltz, the non-custodial bridge used to route bitcoin swaps between the mainchain, the Lightning Network, and Liquid, disabled its swap service indefinitely on Monday, citing months of automated, AI-assisted attacks on its infrastructure. The company said it first took swap services offline at 5:54 am ET on Aug. 3, then followed up about six hours later with a statement saying the suspension will last “until further notice.” Boltz described a recurring intrusion pattern in which individual exploits were contained, but attackers now iterate faster than the team can find and patch issues. The shutdown affects the swap rails behind Lightning and Liquid payments in wallets including Bull Bitcoin and Aqua, and Boltz warned that swap services should not be expected to resume shortly. It said the activity signals a broader shift for Bitcoin services built on open-source infrastructure, where smaller teams face faster-moving threats. Boltz also said no user funds were ever at risk because it is non-custodial by design and uses an atomic swap approach that keeps users in control of their coins throughout a swap. It said its API remains online to process refunds for in-flight swaps, and unilateral refunds work without its infrastructure, while the losses from the contained exploits were described as costs borne by Boltz itself.
