Ahmed El Tabbakh to lead Antares reinsurance on interim basis
Antares said its CEO, Michael van der Straaten, died unexpectedly following a short illness, prompting an interim leadership shift from QIC Group’s Ahmed El Tabbakh.
Reinsurance News reports that Antares will be led on an interim basis by Ahmed El Tabbakh after the unexpected passing of the company’s chief executive, Michael van der Straaten.
According to Antares, van der Straaten died unexpectedly this weekend following a short illness. The executive had more than 40 years of experience in the insurance industry, including senior roles at firms such as Europa Re, Canopius Group, and Chubb.
Antares also said van der Straaten previously led Qatar Insurance Company’s European reinsurance arm before being appointed chief executive of Antares in 2020. In the wake of his death, the company’s statement said El Tabbakh, the Group Chief Business Officer for International at QIC, will oversee the Antares businesses while a longer-term leadership structure is finalized.
El Tabbakh joined QIC Group in 2011 and has more than nine years of industry experience, Antares said. The interim appointment is intended to bridge day to day leadership as Antares completes its longer-term arrangements.
