China issues alerts for river flooding and possible landslides after Typhoon Bavi

Jilin province ordered evacuations near rivers and warned that at least 10 cities faced landslide risk, while China’s cabinet forecasts 20% to 50% more rain than usual in several regions through September.

Chinese authorities warned that more extreme weather is expected to follow former Typhoon Bavi, with Jilin province in northeast China issuing an emergency alert for flooding along multiple rivers, the South China Morning Post reports.

Authorities in Jilin called for traffic controls, urged residents to stay home, and ordered evacuations for people near rivers. Jilin weather authorities also said heavy rain could trigger landslides in at least 10 cities in the Changbai Mountains foothills on Wednesday.

China’s National Meteorological Centre issued a yellow rainstorm alert, described as the third strongest tier in a four-level system, as forecasters said additional storms were expected even as Bavi’s immediate effects eased.

The State Council said five to six more typhoons could form in the northwest Pacific Ocean and South China Sea by the end of next month, with two or three making landfall or affecting China, and it expects heavy rain and flooding across multiple regions through September. It also forecast about 20% to 50% more rain than usual for Beijing, Tianjin, Fujian province, parts of Guangdong province, and Tibet and Xinjiang, according to the report.
