Linux Foundation launches x402 Foundation to standardize agent payments

x402 processed about 75 million transactions totaling $24 million in the past 30 days, using mostly sub-dollar stablecoin transfers, according to CoinDesk.

The Linux Foundation has formally launched the x402 Foundation to standardize internet-native payments between software agents, activating the previously reserved HTTP “Payment Required” code 402 for direct payment requests.

CoinDesk reports that x402 enables clients to pay servers using small stablecoin transfers, typically USDC, without accounts or prior relationships. Under the protocol, a server responds with a 402 code and price, the client signs a stablecoin transfer, then resends the request with payment attached to receive the data.

The foundation said x402 processed about 75 million transactions totaling $24 million over the past 30 days, with payments mostly under a dollar. While that footprint remains small compared with traditional payment networks, it targets machine-to-machine commerce for AI agents.

The Linux Foundation also said x402 is now under formal governance with 40 members and that Coinbase’s contribution of the protocol is complete. Premier members include Ripple, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Stripe, Adyen, Fiserv, Shopify, Google, AWS, and Cloudflare, alongside Circle, MoonPay, and the Solana and Stellar foundations.
