U.S. forms AI and cybersecurity coordination group for essential services
White House officials said the effort will help financial institutions, hospitals, and energy networks respond to vulnerabilities uncovered by AI systems, reducing duplicated work.
The U.S. will formally bring together AI developers and essential services providers to share information on cybersecurity vulnerabilities identified by advanced AI systems and coordinate responses, according to a White House statement, fulfilling a June order by President Donald Trump.
The administration said the group is designed to address concerns that bad actors could use powerful AI tools to exploit weaknesses in software systems supporting critical services, including those relied upon by financial institutions, hospitals, and energy networks.
The coordination includes developers of open-source AI models, White House cyber director Sean Cairncross said, though he did not name specific companies. The article notes open-source options from Nvidia and Meta Platforms, as well as the startup Reflection.
Trump’s June executive order directed the Treasury Department, the National Cyber Director’s Office, the Department of Defense, and the National Security Agency to set up the collaboration, and the move is presented as part of the administration’s shift toward a more active role in monitoring AI and assessing national security risks.
