Unexploded bombs force fire crews to stay 1,000 meters back in Germany

Wildfire in Mueritz National Park has expanded to about 150 hectares, and a nearby village was evacuated for a second time.

Unexploded munitions are hampering efforts to fight a wildfire in Mueritz National Park in northern Germany, local officials said Wednesday, with emergency crews required to keep a safety distance of at least 1,000 meters from the flames.

According to Agence France-Presse, the ordnance, buried in soil from an abandoned military training ground, prevents firefighters from actively putting out the fire, and also limits helicopter support because water would be too high for accurate delivery in the wind.

Officials said the wildfire has grown after a village had to be evacuated for a second time, and it has now stretched over about 150 hectares of the park as flames continue to spread, the outlet reported.
