Breez partners with Turnkey for non-custodial Bitcoin in backend apps

The approach uses Turnkey secure enclaves so app servers cannot access user keys, shifting transaction authority to users.

Breez has partnered with Turnkey to let backend-run applications integrate non-custodial Bitcoin wallets at scale without taking custody of user funds, the companies announced, according to Bitcoin Magazine.

The partnership targets what it describes as a structural problem in mainstream apps: backend architectures that serve millions of users have typically required holding user keys on company servers, which can make the operator a custodian with licensing requirements, legal liability, and a major security burden.

Under the new model, each user receives a wallet whose keys are created and stored inside Turnkey’s secure enclaves, with the companies saying the keys remain out of reach of the application, Breez, and Turnkey. The backend holds credentials defining what actions it can take, while the authority to move funds rests with the user.

Turnkey supports Spark, the network the Breez SDK is built on. The approval flow works by having the user approve a prepared transaction after seeing the amount, fee, and destination, and the server cannot spend funds without that approval, with no seed phrase required from the user.
