Hong Kong construction industry issues rules for sitewide smoking ban
The enforcement plan starts Friday and sets fixed HK$3,000 penalties for individuals caught smoking, while contractors can be fined up to HK$400,000 for failing to keep sites smoke-free.
Hong Kong’s construction sector has rolled out a unified blueprint for a strict site-wide smoking ban that takes effect on Friday, as a safety overhaul tied to last year’s deadly Tai Po fire, according to SCMP Economy. The guidelines were released by the Hong Kong Construction Association along with eight other industry groups to create a single framework for how different types of work should follow the new rules at construction sites.
Under the legal amendments, people caught smoking on a site face a fixed penalty of HK$3,000, while contractors can be fined up to HK$400,000 if they do not ensure sites are smoke-free.
The blueprint also calls for clearer on-site policies, including banning lighters and smoking products that require ignition, defining the covered area, and displaying details about additional violation consequences such as demerit points.
