Hong Kong deadliest Tai Po fire probe to hear government and resident closings
The inquiry into the Nov. 26, 2025 blaze will consider a 400-plus page government closing statement, after the fire killed 168 people and displaced about 5,000.
An independent committee in Hong Kong investigating the territory’s deadliest fire in decades will hold the next round of hearings with closing remarks from the government on Thursday, with a separate concluding statement expected from a legal representative for nine residents, according to SCMP Economy.
Committee chair Justice David Lok Kai-hong said the government’s closing statement is more than 400 pages, while the committee’s statement expected on Friday runs to more than 600 pages, the outlet reported.
The fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po began on Nov. 26, 2025, and lasted 43 hours, killing 168 people and displacing 5,000 residents, during a HK$336 million renovation project.
SCMP Economy said Wednesday’s session heard from lawyers for the estate management company ISS EastPoint, the Urban Renewal Authority, the Competition Commission, and others, amid testimony previously involving allegations that a fire alarm system was switched off and that required parties did not report irregularities.
