Hong Kong to open ride-hailing licence applications in August
Authorities plan a dedicated ride-hailing website on Friday, with most regulatory provisions taking effect August 3.
Hong Kong authorities will invite ride-hailing platforms to apply for operator licences as early as August, according to SCMP Economy, following the completion of the negative vetting process for the required subsidiary legislation.
Transport minister Mable Chan said the government will begin approving licences in batches from the end of November, and it will launch a dedicated website for ride-hailing services on Friday.
Most of the legal provisions governing the sector are set to take effect on August 3, and after platforms receive licences in late November, they will have about nine months to meet the new regulatory requirements.
The changes will be fully enforced on August 22 next year, after the transition period ends.
