Iran frees detained US woman, allowing her to leave the country
The release comes as Trump has ordered renewed strikes and reimposed a naval blockade of Iran’s ports, amid stalled efforts to end the Middle East war.
US President Donald Trump said Iran has freed an American citizen who had been detained since December 2024 and allowed her to leave the country, adding that she was in good condition, according to SCMP Economy.
Trump did not identify the woman or provide details on why she was held, beyond saying she was “wrongfully detained.” The report notes that Iran is holding several Western nationals and is accused of using them as bargaining chips in government negotiations.
The development comes as hostilities between Washington and Tehran continue, with fighting resuming across the region after a memorandum of understanding signed last month that aimed to end the Middle East war.
SCMP Economy also reported that Trump has ordered a resumption of strikes against Iran and reimposed a naval blockade of its ports, and it adds that earlier in April Trump said eight Iranian women would not be executed, a claim officials in Tehran denied.
