PAS seeks bargaining leverage after Johor defeat in Negeri Sembilan
Negeri Sembilan votes on August 1, with Barisan Nasional leaving 11 of 36 seats open for potential partners after saying it will contest 25 constituencies.
Malaysia’s Islamist PAS, after being wiped out in Johor’s state election last weekend, is positioning the result as evidence of its supporters’ ability to swing votes to Barisan Nasional, the Umno-led coalition it competes with for Malaysia’s Malay-Muslim electorate, according to SCMP Economy.
The outlet reports that new constituency-level data is raising doubts about whether PAS can consistently transfer its support to Umno when the two sides coordinate rather than compete, an issue that now carries weight in neighbouring Negeri Sembilan where voters will head to the polls on August 1.
SCMP Economy says BN has left 11 of Negeri Sembilan’s 36 state seats open for possible partners, and the speculation sharpened after BN said on Wednesday night it would contest only 25 constituencies, potentially making room for PAS or other Malay-Muslim allies.
