US revives Taiwan arms package amid Xi summit risk

A reported US$14 billion package is under review and could complicate US-China talks ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s planned trip, with Taiwan described as a red line.

Washington has reopened discussions on multibillion-dollar arms sales to Taiwan, with the potential to cast a shadow over a US-China leaders’ summit scheduled for weeks ahead, according to SCMP Economy.

The outlet reports that US President Donald Trump is expected to submit a US$14 billion Taiwan arms package to the US Congress soon, and that the deal remains under review within the administration.

Observers cited by SCMP Economy say they doubt any package would be approved before Chinese President Xi Jinping’s trip to the US, but they warn that Taiwan is a strict red line and that an arms package could derail bilateral talks.

SCMP Economy adds that the package has been characterized by Trump as “a very good negotiating chip” with Beijing during his state visit to China in May.
