Sheikh Hasina says she will return to Bangladesh in December
Analysts say her comeback could reshape the rivalry with the ruling BNP and limit further gains for Islamist parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami.
South China Morning Post reports that ousted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina has vowed to return to Bangladesh in December even though she faces a death sentence.
The outlet says Hasina, who has lived in India since her government was toppled nearly two years ago by a student-led protest movement, intends to come back home despite the possibility of arrest or death.
According to SCMP Economy, Bangladesh’s prime minister Tarique Rahman took power after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party won a landslide victory in the country’s February general election, while Jamaat-e-Islami secured the second-most seats.
Analysts cited by SCMP Economy said Hasina’s potential return could revive the contest between the banned Awami League and the BNP, while also curbing further gains for Islamist political forces.
